About

Liina Aalto-Setälä (b. 1990) is a visual artist originally from Päijät-Häme, currently working in Helsinki. She holds a Master of Arts degree from Aalto University ARTS. Aalto-Setälä works in a multidisciplinary manner, combining various artistic practices, primarily analog photography, ceramics, and text.

Through ancient myths and speculative fiction, she explores the kinds of stories and forms of knowledge we carry with us and the ways in which they can help us envision the future. Specializing in Finno-Ugric cultural history, she examines old stories from a contemporary perspective, using this approach to address themes related to the ecological crisis and our relationship with nature. Aalto-Setälä works by combining various artistic practices, such as ceramics, analog photography, and text. In her work, she emphasizes slow processes and organic materials, and studies traditional craft techniques. Aalto-Setälä collects and cultivates some of the materials herself, which ties her work to the rhythm of the seasons and creates a direct connection to her immediate surroundings.
